The Uppertones è un potente trio, composto da trombone, voce, piano e batteria, dedicato al suono giamaicano degli anni 50, al Jamaican R'n'B e al Jamaican Boogie, Calypso. Protagonisti del trio tre mostri del mondo ska, rocksteady e reggae: Mr.T-bone (Jamaican Liberation Orchestra, Africa Unite, Giuliano Palma & The Bluebeaters), Peter Truffa (The New York Ska Jazz Ensemble, Giuliano Palma & The Bluebeaters), Count Ferdi (Casino Royale, The Bluebeaters).

Mr.T-bone è un cantante, compositore, trombonista molto noto nella scena ska internazionale. Ha prodotto 8 solo album negli ultimi 12 anni e si è esibito in Europa, US, Canada, Indonesia, Brasile e Messico. Mr.T-bon è uno dei maggiori esponenti della scena ska & reggae italiana dell'ultima decade.

Peter Truffa è un incredibile pianista e cantante, viene da New York. Ha radici blues, jazz, ska e si è esibito per anni con la New York Ska Jazz Ensemble e con Giuliano Palma and the Bluebeaters. Ha lavorato con Mr.T-bone nel suo secondo album "Mr.T-Bone Sees America".
Count Ferdi, aka Ferdinando "Bombodrummer" Masi, è un incredibile batterista. Ferdi è un pioniere della musica ska in Italia e ha fondato i Casino Royale nel 1987, primo gruppo ska in Italia. Ferdi è anche uno degli originali fondatori del progetto The Bluebeaters nel 1994. Compare con Peter Truffa in "Mr.T-Bone Sees America".
LE PAROLE DI MR.T-BONE (EN)
Closer to the bone, the sweater is the meat! The skeleton of a being is the foundation, the origins and substance of it's structure, then there's meat and blood. That's what this record is all about! I had been dreaming about recording a Jamaican Boogie album for years. Sometimes you just need the right timing to spark that magic touch for a special project. That spark was partially lit as I was traveling with my good friend, Dave Hillyard. He played some Rosco Gordon tunes for me and they sounded so full and so cool to my ears. I’d been playing the early tunes of the great Laurel Aitken and to my surprise there’s not a vast difference between Rosco Gordon’s style from the 50's and early ska. As a matter of fact before ska had a name, it was called Jamaican R’n’B or blue beat.
That was cool yet it wasn’t enough to be happy. So I kept on searching and listening. As I learned more, I discovered that Rosco Gordon was influenced by the great jamaican pianist Theophilus Beckford, bringing the emphasis of the up-beat to the Memphis blues. "Bingo!", I thought. It was fascinating to me.
So now I need a great piano player. A great piano player, hmm...my phone rings and guess who’s at the other side of the wire?...my good buddy Peter Truffa. Sbam, another goal!! We played together and we've been friends for years but it had been a long time, actually too long, since we played together. Peter was very enthusiastic about this idea for a group so we started playing and searching for the right sound. We just needed a drummer, and without doubt, we wanted the extraordinary Count Ferdi. Ferdinando has been playing with me for 16 years now and he’s just the best thing that can happen to you if you need a damn good drummer! We started playing right away and loved the sound from the very first notes. The only question was, “Why did we take so long to do it?!"
I always loved the swing era, New Orleans jazz, Delta Blues, Calypso, the great Louis Prima, T-Bone Walker, and Laurel Aitken. So at this point all I had to do was to put it all together and shake! So, we wanted to record this group properly. We needed something to make a trio sound warm and full yet recalling that simple, nostalgic past. We found out that our great friend Ezra rebuilt his own studio (NoMad Studio) He also had tape reels, a very old piano and boom! Goal again! We recorded the album live on tapes and from the analog reels straight to this vinyl...that’s the way we love!
Now you wanna do a cool album? Fine, but you need a good dressing, a proper design for it. I then decided to call up Sergio Formica from Fotosintesilab. He’s a wonderful photographer and I’ve met him many times during those years on the road. I thougt he had a special point of view. He’s the icing on the cake and he definitely discovered our own aesthetic nature, with no words. So once again, that’s the way we love! I can say that I’m extremely excited and happy about this trio and this album.
